Blackburn High School has recently started construction of a new language centre. The old Light Timber Construction buildings will be progressively demolished in a pending redevelopment program. There will also be a new administration building, a new year 7 centre, new Music facilities and a new gym/performance area. The Charlton Music centre will be redeveloped. There will also be a new school entrance.
Blackburn High School has four different houses. These are generally only used for sporting events such as the swimming carnival and athletics day. Established in 1956, Blackburn's Houses were inspired by great Australian Olympians at the Melbourne Olympics. They are Cuthbert (Named after Betty Cuthbert) the yellow house, Landy (After John Landy) the blue house, Porter (After John Porter) the green house and Strickland (After Shirley Strickland) the red house. Students are allocated to each house according to their surnames. People with surnames starting with A to D are in Cuthbert, E to K are Landy, L to P is Porter and Q to Z is Strickland.
